Oil and hydrogen don't have to
be enemies. They are already close partners in oil refineries where
hydrogen is produced and used. Hydrogen can prolong oil reserves while
reducing pollution.
Instead of opposing hydrogen, the oil industry
can sell it at their filling stations.
70% of the
earth is covered by water, an abundant source of hydrogen.
When clean electricity (from wind, water, or sun) is sent through water (H2O)
hydrogen and oxygen are produced with no harmful byproducts.
When hydrogen is burned it combines with oxygen, producing either
combustion
or electricity, with water as the only byproduct.
The cycle
ends with the same amount of water it started with.
The earth's water supply will neither be depleted nor tarnished.
What do we
lose in the process? Renewable electricity. So we need a surplus of it.
What do we gain in the process? Storage of surplus renewable electricity
in hydrogen.
The hydrogen can be dispersed and used as needed,
producing either clean combustion or clean electricity.
